History

Our Bead Society was started in 2007 to provide bead hobbyists an additional place to meet. It became a venue for teaching bead stitches and new beading techniques. Membership has steadily grown as more people have learned of the organization and visited a meeting.

We have participated in Bead and Button magazine’s annual ‘Bead It Forward’ project, which serves as a fundraising vehicle in the fight against breast cancer. Each year Bead and Button has a theme for people to incorporate into 2 inch square beaded designs. The squares are sent to Bead and Button where a team combines them into objects to be auctioned at their annual bead show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

For the last four years, we have created a group entry for the Arts and Crafts division competition at the New York State Fair. Our unique entries won first place and Best in Section in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Additionally, we also won the Director’s Award for Best in Show in 2014.

Our bead society annually hosts a two day bead retreat where larger and more complicated projects are undertaken. Recent past retreats have featured bead embroidery, loom weaving, soutache bead embroidery, and macrame how-to projects.

With no specialty beading stores in the Syracuse area, the bead society asked select vendors to participate in an annual Fall show for the last two years.
